Nut and Hop Production Tours Aug. 4 in Yankton

YANKTON, S.D. – The South Dakota Specialty Producers Association (SDSPA) has coordinated upcoming farm tours to feature the production of nuts and hops on Aug. 4 from 9:00 a.m. – 4 p.m. C.T. in rural Yankton, S.D.
The first tour will begin at 9:00 a.m. C.T. at Ausborn’s Tree Nut Grove, located at 31041 434th Ave., Yankton, S.D, near the corner of 434th Ave. and Kaiser Rd. Darrell and Martha Ausborn will present ‘Growing Nuts in South Dakota,’ and provide a tour of their hazelnut, English and black walnut, heartnut, butternut, Chinese chestnut and pecan plantings.

YANKTON, SD — Hops farms are popping up in Siouxland, but how does this often bitter beer ingredient grow here?
Ryan Heine knows about beer.
He and his family used to grow a handful of hops in the backyard while living in Omaha.
"We were like, 'well, let's just start a hops farm,'" said Heine. "And it really was overnight, instantaneous happenings."
In 2014, Heine might've wondered if the idea of starting a hops farm back where he grew up, near Yankton, SD, might've been crazy.

Freeman Ready To Serve Up Inaugural Chislic Festival

The South Dakota Chislic Festival debuts Saturday at the Freeman softball field/city park. The event, which runs from 4-10 p.m., celebrates the local food favorite which the 2018 Legislature designated as the official state "nosh" or snack.
