Yankton Area Chamber of Commerce and Manufacturing Committee Making Plans for Weeklong Event
When manufacturing employs 31.5% of a community’s workforce - that means it has a major impact on everyone. Manufacturing is one of the four major industries that contribute to the economy of Yankton and this year that industry will be celebrating September 30 through October 4.
The Governor’s Office of Economic Development is working on events across the state to help raise awareness of what this industry does for the state and is encouraging communities to join. “This is a great opportunity for Yankton to showcase our manufacturing sector and the impact it has on not only the local economy but statewide as well as globally” states Chamber Executive Director Carmen Schramm. Yankton has 3.1 times the national average of manufacturers with over $304,422,000 in GDP annually.
This year the week is Monday, September 30 through Friday, October 4. The Yankton manufacturing committee, with representatives from the Yankton Chamber of Commerce, RTEC (Regional Technical Education Center), and several manufacturers have been working on a full slate of events to showcase the wide variety of products made locally that have global impact. This year’s theme for the week is “I Make America” and the manufacturing community encourages Yankton and the area to come see what they are all about.
The public is invited to help kick off the week on Monday in the Kolberg-Pioneer parking lot where there will be a Manufacturing Showcase from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. Yankton manufacturers will have tables and displays educating attendees on the products that they produce. At 10:30 am, there will be a short program featuring Congressman Dusty Johnson and other dignitaries addressing the impact of manufacturing in Yankton, South Dakota and across the nation. Food trucks will be on site during the showcase and the public is encouraged to attend and get a glimpse of the many products made by Yankton manufacturers.
